1. The journey to Fatumnasi
Deciding to explore Fatumnasi means you have to be prepared for quite a challenging terrain. The main gateway to the land is the city of Soe, the capital of Timor Tengah Selatan. You can reach Soe by driving for approximately 2.5 hours from the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara, namely Kupang.
The Soe-Fatumnasi trip is estimated to take about 3 hours if there are no obstacles. Sometimes you find markets spilling over in several villages that are traversed, causing traffic to be slightly obstructed. At several points, especially when approaching Fatumnasi, the road conditions also look rocky.

Located at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, Fatumnasi is a cold area. Fatumnasi is also located at the foot of the highest mountain in East Nusa Tenggara, called Mount Mutis. If you like hiking, climbing to the top of Mutis at an altitude of 2,427 meters above sea level is an agenda you shouldn’t miss.
Because it is a short mountain, you can climb Mount Mutis without the need to set up a tent. It’s just that you must be accompanied by a local guide because there are no signs along the hiking trail. Not far from the hiking trail to Mount Mutis, you can find a forest that is overgrown with trees similar to bonsai trees. That’s why the forest area is often called a bonsai forest even though the trees that live in it come from the ampupu tree species or Eucalyptus urophylla.

In addition to the twisting of the tree’s trunk, the roots that stick out are also overgrown with coarse-textured moss. The density of the ampupu tree as high as 2.5 meters makes this forest even more exotic and magical.

Not only Mount Mutis and the bonsai forest which are tourist attractions in Fatumnasi, you should try exploring the former marble mining area, called Fatunausus. Here, you can enjoy the view of the karst cliffs that merge with the green hills in the distance.
There is also the Nefo Kaenka lake which is surrounded by trees. The water of the lake is not clear, but the presence of shady trees combined with the breezy breeze makes the shore of the lake Nefo Kaenka perfect for unwind.

I won’t be satisfied exploring Fatumnasi without spending the night. Here, you can spend the night at a homestay managed by a traditional Fatumnasi elder, Mateos Anin.
Don’t imagine a homestay like in big cities because the house provided is a traditional house called umay bubu. The roof is made of thatch and the walls of the house form a circle. The homestay is often used by tourists planning to climb Mount Mutis.
